Ethiopian Community Center, Inc. (ECC) ESOL Instructor

The Ethiopian Community Center, Inc. (ECC) is seeking qualified part-time ESOL instructors for its Vocational English Language Program. The program offers intermediate and advanced English literacy courses for African immigrant residents with limited English proficiency who live in Takoma Park’s Maple Ave corridor. The objective of this program is to equip adults in low wage and low skill jobs with English language skills and increase their access to educational and workforce development opportunities. In addition to in-class instruction, the program will include conversation practice sessions, culturally and linguistically competent counseling, and linkage to workforce development and education programs.
Classes begin in September 2018, and meet once a week on Saturday mornings for four hours from 9:00am – 1:00pm.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Enhance the program curriculum and design lesson plans the align language acquisition goals with students’ educational and career goals
• Develop course materials specific to the assigned level and prepare weekly lesson plans that reflect students’ educational and career interests.
• Provide instruction that supports multiple learning styles and preferences 
• Assess student progress and learning gains using various evaluation tools and methods, and develop plans for addressing learning gaps
• Periodically meet and work with program staff to enhance students’ experience and exposure through partnerships with employment and education service providers, and out of class learning opportunities
• Serve as a liaison between students and program staff to respond to student needs for support and refer students to appropriate services.
• Maintain excellent records pertaining to the program including student attendance, progress, gains and needs.
Successful candidates will have:
• A passion for teaching, and an ability to engage, inspire, and teach adult learners from multicultural backgrounds.
• TESOL certification or a post-secondary degree in adult education, linguistics, or related field.
• A minimum of two to three years of experience teaching English, ideally in multicultural settings.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills.
• Proficiency in Amharic, French, or Creole; and familiarity with Montgomery County, Takoma Park, and area services and programs a plus.
