Community Learning Groups Pilot

MCAEL is currently piloting a new initiative -- MCAEL Connects: Community Learning Groups. Recognizing the many competing priorities of adult learners and potential barriers preventing them from taking classes, MCAEL’s Community Learning Groups (CLG) model is one which is designed to bring introductory English instruction to where the learners are in targeted areas in Montgomery County. The model builds on already existing social ties to assist participants become more comfortable with learning English in a group setting and to provide them with information on community-based classes in the county and other learning resources. At the same time, these CLGs will serve as an opportunity for potential new instructors to be trained in adult ESOL instruction with the guidance of an experienced lead instructor. An important component of MCAEL’s Racial Equity Strategic Plan, MCAEL seeks to increase diversity among adult ESOL instructors by working with community leaders and nonprofits to reach out to individuals who were/are English language learners themselves or are children of English language learners.

The first pilot for this program took place in partnership with Identity, Inc.; seven participants took part in the 10-week ESOL class, which met once a week for 1.5 hours. Participants were at the same time enrolled (or recently completed their training) in a Spanish-language childcare training course organized by Identity in partnership with Montgomery College. This pilot enabled MCAEL to learn a lot about the chosen curriculum, the timing/length of the class, how best to refer individuals onward to other ESOL classes, etc. These lessons will all be incorporated into the CLG model, as MCAEL moves forward with additional pilots and expansion of the CLGs in summer/fall 2021.
