Literacy Scroll Comes to Washington D.C.

MCAEL Joins National Organizations to Deliver Literacy Scroll to Washington

On September 22nd, MCAEL joined a delegation in Washington that delivered the Right to Literacy scroll to members of the newly-formed Congressional Adult Literacy Caucus.  The delegation also briefed leaders in the Office of Vocational and Adult Education.

Among the delegation were Pro Literacy CEO David Harvey, Literacy Powerline CEO Margaret Doughty, and Milton Whitley, Pro Literacy student of the year and a student at the Literacy Council of Montgomery County.

Milton was joined by his tutor, Mary-Ellen Friedland, and Basic Literacy Program Coordinator, Mike Trageser. Also joining MCAEL were Sissy Kegley, Jose Gonzalez (Thomas Shortman), and Donna Kinerney and Melissa Zervos (Montgomery College). Members of DC Learns, Prince George’s Literacy Council, and Baltimore Reads also participated.

"Without MCAEL, we’d be duplicating efforts and maybe not doing [our work] very well.  I’m so impressed by the people of all ages and backgrounds who are involved.  We all have a commitment to help people learn English, so they can function in the community and within families."
