MCAEL Provider Meeting: Talking about Transitions from ESOL: GED, Workforce and the Community
December 11, 2013
Info: 1pm - 3pm
Location: 12320 Parklawn Drive, Rockville, MD
This meeting will explore what skills ESOL providers need to be cultivating in order to assist learners with transitioning into a GED class, the workplace or to connect with opportunities in the community (social opportunities i.e. volunteering). A panel will talk about the skills needed for each area and then host a Q & A session.
During the meeting, information on he current The Survey of Adult Skills, an international survey conducted in 33 countries as part of the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), will also be explored. Results to be released in October 2013. The survey measures the key cognitive and workplace skills needed for individuals to participate in society and for economies to prosper. The last survey done for adult education was over 10 years ago! The evidence from this Survey will help countries better understand how education and training systems can nurture these skills. Educators, policy makers and labor economists will use this information to develop economic, education and social policies that will continue to enhance the skills of adults. http://www.oecd.org/site/piaac/surveyofadultskills.htm
The second half of the meeting will be focused discussion time for participants to explore with one another the how – what practical ways can programs prepare ESOL learners for the future after ESOL classes?
