FY13 Grant Awards Announcements
The Montgomery Coalition for Adult English Literacy announces the award of $525,000 in grants to support adult English literacy programs across Montgomery County. Funding for the grants is provided in partnership with the Montgomery County Government, thanks to the generous support of County Executive Leggett and the Montgomery County Council. MCAEL thanks the Montgomery County Government for supporting literacy.
The objective of MCAEL’s grants program is to increase the availability of adult English literacy services offered to diverse populations, and to improve the quality of those services. Since the grant program began in 2006, community based organizations funded through the grants have served over 3,000 English language learners on average each year. When talking about the grants program, Tiffany Heath, MCAEL Board Member, stated, “The MCAEL Grants Panel [is] an opportunity to ensure that the newest members of our community can not only provide for their immediate needs, but to ensure that they and their families will have a bright future in Maryland. The providers and volunteers we work with are invested leaders in the community and it is a privilege to work alongside to assist them with their goals to improve their programs.” Nevertheless, thousands of adults remain on waiting lists. For FY2013, funding was made available to support Adult English Literacy Programs in Montgomery County and, through the Micro Literacy Access Grants, to support a class or conversation club in order to: (1) access and leverage new partnerships and new resources; (2) create access to English classes for underserved populations; and (3) develop access points to link individuals to the larger ESOL system that exists in the County.
