Volunteer to determine funding for Adult English Literacy Classes on Montgomery County



Each year, we form a grant review panel, broadly representing Montgomery County, who help us in determine funding for Adult Literacy Classes across the county.  We are looking for non-profit/business professionals as well as community members with experience in:


  • Adult ESOL/education
  • Grantmaking/grant review
  • Language Learning
  • Different regions of the County
  • Diverse communities and
    their needs

The public is best served through a coordinated approach to providing quality English literacy education through a network of professional adult English educators and leaders. To do this, we need community members to support and assist us in expanding services through our grants process.


Volunteer to be part of the Community Grants Panel. MCAEL is a community coalition that works to expand access to, and improve the quality of, adult English literacy classes in Montgomery County, MD. The MCAEL grant program is one way we work toward the goal of serving more learners. With funding from the Montgomery County government, MCAEL offers grants to support quality adult ESOL classes. 


MCAEL is seeking nonprofit and business professionals, adult education/ESOL specialists, and community representatives from in and around the Montgomery County area to serve on the Community Grants Panel. (Note: Individuals who are in leadership roles -- e.g., staff members or board members, etc. -- in organizations receiving or applying for grant funding from MCAEL in Montgomery County or those who otherwise have a similar conflict of interest are not eligible.) 


Grant panelists read and evaluate 20-30 applications, interview applicants, and join in making funding recommendations to the MCAEL Board of Directors. A more detailed schedule of time commitment is available upon request. 

Grant recipient duties usually run from mid-April to early June. This includes an orientation, application reviews, interviews, and a final funding recommendation meeting. Interested applicants living or working in the County should complete this form
